The 10 Best Places to Watch the Eclipse in the Vega Baja

Ten strategic viewing spots across nine Vega Baja municipalities have been identified as ideal locations to witness the solar eclipse on August 12. The eclipse commences around 7:30pm and concludes close to 9:30pm, with slight variations in timing across municipalities. While Alicante province is situated outside the path of totality, the Sun will be nearly entirely obscured at the eclipse's peak, peaking at approximately 8:35pm in Vega Baja.

To ensure clear views, it is crucial to select a site with an unobstructed western horizon. Elevated vantage points and spacious open areas are expected to yield the best perspectives.

MeteOrihuela, a weather specialist, has compiled a list of ten recommended observation points throughout the region, encompassing viewpoints, nature reserves, sports facilities, and historical landmarks. Two standout locations in Rojales, namely the Mirador de las Tres Cruces, provide expansive panoramic vistas across the Vega Baja due to its elevated position. Similarly, Granja de Rocamora's Sports Centre offers a broad, relatively uncluttered setting for eclipse observation.

Torrevieja features two locations: La Mata Lagoon and the Pink Salt Lagoon. These natural areas boast wide, open landscapes conducive to excellent visibility. However, attendees must remain within designated areas, adhere to environmental regulations, and refrain from obstructing roads or emergency access pathways. Inland alternatives include the La Pilarica Sanctuary in Benejúzar and La Loma (Lo Chusco) in Bigastro, situated away from heavily developed coastal regions.

Orihuela is represented by the Cabezo de Hurchillo, an elevated location offering extensive views of the surrounding countryside. Additionally, Hondo de Amorós in San Fulgencio and Guardamar Castle in Guardamar del Segura are included on the list, completing the set of ten observation points distributed across Vega Baja.

For optimal viewing, attendees are advised to arrive early, minimize travel delays, and utilize only certified eclipse glasses adhering to the ISO 12312-2 safety standard. Ordinary sunglasses, cameras, binoculars, and homemade filters do not offer sufficient eye protection.
