Bengaluru’s Science Gallery opens doors to mysteries of quantum physics

In Bengaluru, the Science Gallery has unveiled a new exhibition called 'QUANTUM', delving into the mysteries of quantum physics. The exhibit aims not only to explain scientific concepts but also to spark meaningful discussions among visitors.

One of the intriguing concepts presented is Schrödinger's cat, a thought experiment that posits a cat inside a sealed box, both dead and alive until the box is opened. This paradox highlights the principle of quantum superposition, a fundamental idea in quantum mechanics.

The exhibition features a blend of artistic installations and interactive displays, created by contributors from various parts of the world. One such artistic representation is Mr Tompkins, a cat that appears dead from one viewpoint and alive from another. Accompanying booklets provide different fates for the cat, adding to the intrigue.

Another standout exhibit is a sealed suitcase emitting photons one at a time, part of the QuanTour international science outreach project. This suitcase has previously been displayed at the Indian Institute of Science and will soon head to Australia.

The exhibition also includes historical documents, such as correspondence between renowned physicists Albert Einstein and Satyendra Nath Bose, showcasing the evolution of quantum theory. Additionally, it highlights the contributions of female scientists whose work has been overshadowed by their male counterparts.

Interactive elements such as video games and virtual reality displays are available for visitors who wish to engage directly with the subject. 'QUANTUM' is accessible to all on all days of the week, except Monday and Tuesday, with curatorial walkthroughs scheduled during the Independence Day weekend.
