Taiwan court sentences a woman to 7 years in prison for conspiring with Chinese officials

A Taiwanese court handed down a seven-year prison sentence to Hsu Chun-ying on Tuesday, finding her guilty of conspiring with Chinese officials and proxies to sway Taiwanese politics. Hsu, born in China and now a resident of Taiwan, was convicted under the Anti-Infiltration Act for her communications with Chinese officials and for transferring 24.5 million New Taiwan Dollars ($760,000) to accounts outside of regular banking channels from the mainland.

This case has drawn significant media coverage, partially due to Hsu's status as a "mainland spouse" – individuals from China who immigrated to Taiwan following marriage. The contentious issue of mainland spouses has been on the rise amid escalating tensions between China and Taiwan, both countries split following a civil war in 1949.

China asserts sovereignty over the island, regularly deploying fighter jets and naval vessels for military exercises near Taiwan, which Taiwan responds to by bolstering its defense and increasing its military procurement. Taiwan's government alleged that Hsu's actions were aimed at gathering intelligence for China and influencing Taiwanese politics.

Prosecutors had highlighted exchanges between Hsu and a Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs director, revealing discussions about supporting specific political parties to secure positions for mainland spouses in both the Taipei mayoral election and the 2024 presidential election. Hsu had initially been a candidate for the Taiwan People’s Party legislature but withdrew due to concerns over her loyalty and alleged ties to China.
