Syrian prosecutor to seek Interpol help in arrest of Assad, brother after death sentences

Syria's Prosecutor General, Judge Hassan Al-Turba, has hailed the death sentences handed down to former President Bashar Assad and his brother Maher as a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice, vowing to continue prosecuting former regime figures. Speaking to Al Arabiya, Al-Turba emphasized that the issuance of the death sentences marked a "historic day for justice" and that trials of former regime officials are still in the early stages of the country's path towards justice.

He stated that the death sentences have gone through all legal procedures and that Syrian authorities will work with Interpol to ensure the arrest and extradition of those convicted. Al-Turba reaffirmed the government's commitment to punishing all those who committed crimes against the Syrian people, noting that thousands of names are currently under trial.

He also clarified that the prosecution of former regime officials has not been selective, emphasizing that the country's criminal law is sufficient to prosecute those responsible for crimes. Furthermore, Al-Turba revealed that amendments to the penal code will address war crimes, as part of the ongoing trials related to the crimes committed during the previous regime.
