Sweden Makes it Easier for Foreign Workers to Get Permanent Residence

Sweden has revised its rules for granting permanent residence to foreign workers. Under the new regulations, eligible temporary residents can apply for permanent residence as soon as they meet the required qualification period, rather than waiting until their current permit is due for renewal. Previously, applicants who had already satisfied the residency requirement were still required to wait until their temporary permit was up for renewal before they could apply for permanent residence.

The new policy allows eligible applicants to submit their permanent residence application while their existing temporary permit is still valid. For most workers with standard work permits, the qualification period for permanent residence is four years, while EU Blue Card holders and researcher permit holders must meet the three-year mark. Once granted, the temporary residence permit can be revoked and replaced with a permanent residence permit.

This amendment does not introduce a new pathway to permanent residence nor does it alter the existing criteria for eligibility. Applicants must still meet the same requirements to qualify. The change is anticipated to enable eligible foreign nationals to acquire permanent residence more swiftly, minimizing uncertainty about their immigration status and diminishing the risk of needing to extend their temporary permit.

It also provides successful applicants with earlier access to the advantages associated with permanent residence.

The amendment could also benefit employers by offering greater flexibility in workforce management, as permanent residence applications will no longer need to be arranged in conjunction with the expiration dates of employees' temporary permits.
