Stakeholders divided over NFF elections

Nigerian football stakeholders are divided over calls to suspend the upcoming Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) elections, according to The PUNCH. Former Dream Team member Abiodun Obafemi lamented the contrast between the country's Olympic triumph in 1996 and the current state of Nigerian football following recent setbacks. He noted that Nigeria's Super Falcons and Flying Eagles have both failed to qualify for the Women's World Cup and Africa Under-20 Cup, respectively.

Former Super Eagles captain Segun Odegbami has called for a temporary suspension of the 2026 NFF Executive Committee elections, arguing that the current system has failed to match the country's talent. Odegbami claims the NFF elections have become a "four-yearly ritual of crisis" and that the electoral structure gives incumbents an overwhelming advantage.

Ebi Egbe, CEO of Monimichelle Sports Facility, echoed this sentiment, stating that the current structure makes it difficult for genuine reformers to compete. However, Ahmed Shuaibu Gara-Gombe, founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Athletics and Other Sports Development Commission, rejected Odegbami's position, claiming it was driven by personal interest rather than broader development.

Gara-Gombe challenged Odegbami to address controversies surrounding the Shell Cup and the Nigeria Academicals Sports Committee, which he chaired. While rejecting calls to halt the elections outright, Gara-Gombe agreed that electoral reforms were necessary, but insisted they should be addressed through the National Assembly rather than court action.
