Spain expresses solidarity with Colombia as rescuers search for earthquake survivors

Spain expressed support and solidarity with Colombia following a devastating earthquake on Monday, which killed at least 132 people and injured over 500. rescue teams are still searching for survivors through the rubble of collapsed buildings, while Colombian authorities assess the full extent of the destruction. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez conveyed the 'affection and solidarity' of Spain to the Colombian people, stating his thoughts were 'with the victims, their families, and all the affected people'.

Spain's Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares revealed that 164 Spanish nationals remained unaccounted for, with the embassy and consulates working to confirm their safety. Both Spanish and Colombian authorities urged citizens to contact their respective consulates for assistance. The earthquake struck near San José del Palmar, Chocó department, at a depth of approximately 107 kilometres.

The European Union has activated its Copernicus satellite system to provide imagery and support rescue efforts, while the United States has offered $15.5 million in assistance. Neighbouring countries, including Venezuela and Ecuador, have pledged to send rescue teams to Colombia.
