Since Gold Coast, national security has never faced an open trial – Atta Akyea

Legal counsel Samuel Atta Akyea, representing former NSB Director-General Kwabena Adu-Boahen, asserts that the ongoing trial presents a unique challenge as national security issues have never before faced open court proceedings. This assertion comes in response to the case's unprecedented nature, as noted by Akyea during an interview on Joy News' PM Express.

He emphasized the sensitive nature of national security matters and the historic precedent this trial could set for Ghanaian courts. Akyea vehemently opposed the idea of delegating his client's case to a junior lawyer, emphasizing the complexity and sensitivity of the matter. He criticized what he termed as "selective justice," questioning why some cases, including murder, manslaughter, rape, and other criminal offenses, remained pending while this national security case was expedited.

Akyea argued that the decision to prioritize certain cases should not undermine established court procedures. He expressed concern over judges being directed to continue with part-heard cases, despite other demands on lawyers' time, questioning the fairness and consistency of applying different standards to cases based on public attention.

Akyea insisted that this case is too significant for him to cede to a junior attorney, underscoring the severity and gravity of the issues at stake. He questioned the Chief Justice's decision to impose this unprecedented trial, emphasizing the need to respect established court traditions and statutory provisions.
