Gen Alpha students storm DM office in Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh, over road construction

On August 11, 2026, Generation Alpha students and their parents from Chandupur, Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh, marched with national flags to the district Collectorate in an effort to demand the construction of a long-awaited road leading to their school. The protest, which was captured on video and went viral on social media, involved over 200 students and at least 50 parents from the villages and hamlets of Chandupur gram panchayat in Kurara block.

The students and their parents expressed their concerns about the poor condition of the unpaved road that leads to their school. During the monsoon season, the road becomes nearly impassable, transforming into a muddy path that makes it difficult for students to reach school and for residents to transport the ill to medical facilities. Furthermore, an alternative route that was previously used by the community has been closed off by the Forest Department, further limiting their access.

A parent accompanying the students noted that local authorities had attempted to provide a temporary solution by placing soil on the road. However, the road reverted to a muddy state once the rains began. The students had previously tried to highlight this issue, but their efforts were not successful in the past.

When the students reached the Collectorate premises, carrying the Tricolour and banners, local officials and police personnel tried to prevent the situation from escalating. Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Abhishek Kumar and Circle Officer Yashpal Singh attempted to stop the students from proceeding towards the DM's office. Despite these attempts, the students persisted, and after discussions with officials, they were pacified.

The Hindu attempted to speak with the District Magistrate (DM) Hamirpur but was unable to obtain a response.
