Russian surgeons perform world’s first skull base surgery on 101-year-old patient

A Russian medical team at Samara University Hospital has accomplished the first skull base surgery on a 101-year-old patient. The hospital's ear, nose, and throat department head, Olesya Nabrezhnyeva, revealed that the surgery was necessary due to the patient's sphenoid sinusitis. Despite the patient's advanced age, the condition warranted surgical intervention.

Nabrezhnyeva added that the patient was observed medically for a week post-operation and was discharged once his condition improved. She emphasized that while the hospital regularly performs such procedures, this was the first time the surgery was conducted on a patient of such advanced age. Nabrezhnyeva also noted that the success of the operation could lead to a reevaluation of age restrictions for certain surgical interventions, especially as medical technology advances and supporting indicators suggest higher chances of successful outcomes.
