Retired firefighter suffered brain injury after eating oysters at steakhouse: Lawsuit

Joe Belgio, a retired firefighter and former Marine, has been hospitalized for over a year following severe health complications allegedly caused by eating raw oysters at the Oak Brook steakhouse, Gibsons Steakhouse. According to attorneys representing Belgio, he suffered permanent brain injuries after becoming ill following a meal at the restaurant in June of the previous year, during a family celebration.

The lawsuit alleges that Belgio suffered from multiple pathogens associated with shellfish contamination and that he has been left with severe, long-term impairments, likely resulting in bedridden confinement for the remainder of his life.

Belgio's fiancé, Melanie Stayer, expressed her shock at the sudden change in her partner, who had previously been described as a strong and healthy man. Stayer emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the potential risks of consuming contaminated food. She highlighted that Belgio, who had served his country and bravely responded to emergency situations, was now confined to a hospital bed, unable to recover from his ordeal.

In response to the allegations, Gibson's Steakhouse spokesperson stated that there have been no other reported cases of illness and that their internal investigation found no evidence to support the claim that their establishment caused Belgio's health condition. The lawsuit also names Supreme Lobster and Seafood Company as a defendant, though the company has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Family, friends, and members of Belgio's former fire department are working together to support his recovery and care, while supporters continue to raise funds for his family during this challenging time.
