Residents in German state of Hesse urged to save water as wildfires rage

Residents in the German state of Hesse have been advised to conserve water as wildfires rage in the region. Firefighters are battling multiple fires in central Hesse, amid a series of devastating wildfires that have affected France, Spain and other parts of southern Europe. Extreme heat and minimal rainfall have caused major disruption across Germany this summer, including low river water levels, an increase in heat-related illnesses and deaths.

The fires broke out in a woodland area between Ober-and Niederrodenbach (Main-Kinzig), east of Frankfurt, near the Bavarian border, on Monday afternoon. It remains unclear if the individual fire sites are connected, but local police have not ruled out arson. No injuries have been reported, and firefighting efforts continue throughout the night.

To ensure sufficient water reserves for firefighting, residents are urged to minimize water usage. Utility company Kreiswerke Main-Kinzig has requested that residents avoid showering, bathing, watering gardens, and other water-intensive activities. Every liter counts, the company emphasized.

Emergency services from Bavaria have joined the operation, with the Integrated Control Centre in the Main-Kinzig district alerting people via the Katwarn warning system, particularly in the Rodenbach municipal area. Concerns have been raised over ash and heavy smoke, with locals advised to close windows and doors and switch off ventilation systems and air conditioning.

On Monday, a section of the A7 highway was closed due to a wildfire in Lower Saxony, near Göttingen and Kassel. The blaze broke out in woodland and caused smoke to reduce road safety, leading to the closure of both the southbound and northbound carriageways. Motorists were advised to avoid the area.
