Red Cross assesses damage after severe winds hit homes in Free State

The South African Red Cross Society is currently evaluating the damage inflicted by strong winds in Koppies, a farming town located in the Free State province of South Africa. Several homes in the area have reportedly suffered roof damage due to the persistent strong winds and rainfall that have been ongoing in parts of the province.

Koppies is situated in the Fezile Dabi District Municipality, which is located near the Renoster River. The Renoster River, a vital component of the region's drainage system, runs through the affected area. The Ngwathe Local Municipality has confirmed that the Renoster River is indeed present in the region.

The Red Cross has stated that it is providing humanitarian assistance to the households impacted by the severe weather conditions. Claudia Mini, the provincial manager of the Red Cross, mentioned, "In Fezile Dabi, we have koppies currently affected, followed by Gariep, Edenburg, and Thabo Mufutsanyana, where our volunteers are on the ground in collaboration with the disaster management centre and municipalities. We are actively working on finalizing our assessment, considering the persistent wind and rainfall."

The Red Cross organization emphasizes that its volunteers are working closely with disaster management authorities and local municipalities in the affected areas as the assessment process continues.
