Police deploy drones, ‘stealth cars’ as 10 drivers arrested for alleged street racing

Ten individuals have been apprehended for participating in unauthorized street races along a Hong Kong highway, with law enforcement utilizing drones and covert high-performance automobiles to monitor the suspects' actions and bring them to justice. Police announced on Tuesday that the offenders, consisting of nine men and a woman aged between 25 and 51, were detained from August 3 to 10 on suspicion of reckless driving during a traffic police operation along Kwun Tong Bypass, a major thoroughfare in East Kowloon.

Senior Inspector Pun Chun-ho of the police's Traffic Kowloon East enforcement and control division stated that several arrested drivers were observed driving at excessive speeds, weaving dangerously through traffic. During the operation, dubbed "Fastshield," seven private automobiles and three motorcycles were seized for further investigation.

Inspector Pun explained that the force had employed drones and unmarked police vehicles, or "stealth cars," to film the unlawful racing and apprehend the suspects' vehicles. "By leveraging the drones' agility and extensive coverage, we executed aerial surveillance and commanded our forces," he explained. "At an opportune moment and under safe circumstances, we dispatched unmarked police cars, or 'stealth cars,' pre-positioned at strategic locations to intercept target vehicles, gather evidence, and enforce the law."

Inspector Pun added that the use of drones in the operation proved highly effective, conserving substantial manpower and adhering to the force's "smart policing" strategy. "The illegal acts captured on drone footage will serve as evidence, fortifying the prosecution's case," he stated. In Hong Kong, the maximum penalty for reckless driving is three years' imprisonment and a HK$25,000 fine upon conviction.
