On the day of the special session of the Malaysian Parliament, the Progressives walked out in protest after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim failed to attend, as he had been undergoing medical treatment. Speaker Johari Abdul explained that any MP wishing to leave the chamber was free to do so, and anyone wishing to remain was also free to do so.

Takiyuddin Hassan, the Whip of the National Islam Party (PN), earlier stated that Anwar's presence was crucial for a thorough explanation regarding the report of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) Tabung Haji. He emphasized that the issue of Tabung Haji was of utmost public concern and should be addressed directly by Anwar once he returned to duty.

Johari noted that he was bound by Rule 11(3) of the House of Representatives' Standing Orders after receiving Anwar's request to postpone the special session until Anwar's return, following which there would be no choice but to proceed. He reiterated that Anwar's absence did not mean the government was not represented, as Deputy Prime Minister and cabinet ministers were present to speak on its behalf.

The issue could still be discussed in the next two parliamentary sessions, including the budget session commencing on October 5. Johari reminded that the House of Progressive Representatives could consider the matter discussed in the special session before preparing a resolution or summoning the relevant parties for further clarification.

The House, consisting of 12 members, was chaired by a member of Parliament who was also present in the House of Representatives. Finally, Johari emphasized that the decision to continue the special session was firm and would continue under the guidance of the Deputy Prime Minister (Islamic Affairs) Zulkifli Hasan.
