Parliament Monsoon Session Live: Amit Shah likely to speak on Delhi student protest crackdown

Parliament's Monsoon Session is set to host a potentially contentious session on Tuesday as Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to address the heavy-handed police response to student protesters during the July 20 'Sansad March' in Delhi. The government has expressed readiness to engage in discussions regarding student protests across the nation, with Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju confirming this.

However, the Opposition has insisted that they will need to hear the government's response to the student agitation peacefully.

On Monday, both Houses of Parliament were adjourned due to the Opposition's demand for Amit Shah's presence amidst constant slogans. The Opposition had organized a protest outside Parliament, carrying signs demanding that the Home Minister provide answers to their concerns. This absence of Shah has drawn criticism from the Opposition, who are seeking accountability regarding the alleged police excesses against the student protesters.

In addition to addressing the issue of student protests, Amit Shah will also be moving a Bill to rename Kerala as the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026. Furthermore, the government's National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which aims to facilitate faster funding for cooperative societies, will also be discussed during the session.
