Five years after return, Afghan Taliban government builds diplomacy

Five years after retaking control of Afghanistan, the Taliban government is forging diplomatic ties with a growing number of countries, despite not receiving formal recognition. Russia has been the sole nation to officially acknowledge the Taliban regime, with many Western states demanding evidence of domestic reforms before doing the same.

However, numerous countries are still engaging with the Taliban leadership due to practical reasons. The Taliban's diplomatic approach has included hosting envoys in Kabul and sharing photos of these visits, including those from China, Japan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Britain. The leadership has also hosted delegates from Central Asian landlocked nations, recognizing the strategic importance of regional connections.

Erica Gaston, a UN official, noted that regional states are more pragmatic in dealing with the Taliban authorities, acknowledging the current reality. The Taliban has also pursued cross-border infrastructure projects to stimulate the struggling economy and attract foreign investment from China and other countries. Nonetheless, foreign funds remain scarce due to the Taliban's lack of official recognition.

Despite challenges, some countries have imposed sanctions on Taliban members, but political realities have shifted, leading to increased cooperation. India, once a staunch opponent, has now strengthened ties with the Taliban and secured a sanctions waiver for its Foreign Minister to visit. The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for top Taliban officials for alleged crimes against humanity, but no changes in policy are anticipated.
