Packers’ Jordan Love plans to play Thursday after injuring his thumb in last year’s preseason opener

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love says he's not opposed to playing at least a few preseason games, despite a thumb injury last year that forced him to miss training camp. The 2020 first-round pick from Utah State has played in each of his three seasons of preseason openers as a starter, but suffered a left (non-throwing) thumb injury during an exhibition game against the New York Jets last year. Surgery followed, and he returned to practice just six days later.

Love admits playing differently in the preseason compared to the regular season. He emphasizes staying healthy, avoiding unnecessary hits, and focusing on making smart decisions to protect the ball. Though the Packers' coach, Matt LaFleur, has indicated Love may play limited roles, Love doesn't anticipate more than one or two series.

LaFleur believes teams perform better early in the season when regular starters participate in preseason games. Love agrees, noting that it helps him get back into the "real game feel." The preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers will provide Love and LaFleur an opportunity to reunite with former teammate and current quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has expressed limited interest in preseason play.

LaFleur highlighted Love's improvement in protections and adjustments since joining the NFL, attributing much of his progress to watching Rodgers during his time in Green Bay.
