OpenAI is losing another top executive as its former COO leaves to start something new

OpenAI's Brad Lightcap announced on Tuesday his departure from the company to embark on a new venture. This comes as the AI firm prepares for its public listing amid heightened demand for artificial intelligence. In a recent post on social media platform X, Lightcap expressed his focus on future challenges and the world's need to address certain critical matters as OpenAI enters a new phase.

Upon learning of Lightcap's post, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, expressed his enthusiasm to collaborate on future endeavors. Lightcap transitioned from his role as Chief Operating Officer in April to a position leading special projects. Before joining OpenAI in 2018, he had been associated with venture capital firm Y Combinator. Lightcap's responsibilities have been gradually moving away from managing larger organizations in recent months, so OpenAI does not anticipate his exit to disrupt team operations.

This announcement follows a similar decision by Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of AGI deployment, who announced in July her intention to transition from a full-time role to a part-time advisory position at the company following an extended medical leave for a neuroimmune condition.
