ODI World Cup: West Indies miss direct entry, to play Qualifier

The West Indies cricket team, known for their dominance in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), has struggled to secure a direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Despite being two-time world champions in the longer white-ball format, they failed to make the automatic entry list this time as well.

The Caribbean team, currently ranked 10th in the ICC ODI rankings, will not qualify automatically even if they win both remaining ODIs against India by the September 30 deadline. This marks the second consecutive time they have missed out on direct entry, following their exclusion from the 2023 World Cup, where they had to participate in the Qualifier and finished fifth in the Super Six phase.

The new qualifying system introduces a more complicated route to the tournament. The team winning the Qualifier gets direct entry into the second round, while those in second, third, and fourth places must compete in the first round, called the Super Series, with the winner progressing to the second round. The Qualifier will feature Ireland and the West Indies, along with the top four teams from the Cricket World Cup League 2.

The remaining four spots will go to teams advancing from the World Cup Qualifier Playoff, which includes the four lowest-ranked sides from the CWC League 2 and four from the Challenge League, a third division. For the West Indies, this development raises questions about whether their current players can secure qualification and dispel the notion that their 2023 performance was an anomaly.
