Muhyiddin urges end to political appointments in Tabung Haji leadership

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has called for an end to political appointments within the leadership of Tabung Haji (TH), the country's compulsory retirement savings fund. In a statement during a special Dewan Rakyat session, Muhyiddin emphasized that the selection of board members, senior executives, and officials in TH's subsidiaries should be based on merit, professional expertise, and integrity.

He stressed that candidates must possess relevant experience in finance, banking, investment, law, and Shariah while undergoing a rigorous "fit and proper person" assessment. Muhyiddin stressed that the appointments must be free from conflicts of interest, integrity concerns, or external political pressures. Additionally, the former premier urged the government to conduct a thorough, independent forensic audit of TH within a year, with the objective of addressing governance issues, potential fund mismanagement, and fraud.

He also demanded the swift implementation of the recommendations from the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report, which includes strengthening TH's governing legislation, enhancing regulatory oversight, establishing an independent investment committee, and reviewing the fund's investment portfolio to ensure prudent and Shariah-compliant management.
