Most White Volta residents evacuated ahead of Bagre Dam spillage — NADMO

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in Ghana's Upper East Region has ramped up efforts to educate farmers and residents living near the White Volta on the imminent flood risk posed by the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso. Upper East Regional Director Rebecca Akolgo highlighted the agency's focus on convincing farmers to evacuate from flood-prone areas due to the dam's anticipated spillage.

Akolgo emphasized that NADMO's sensitisation has been bolstered by local leaders and authorities, such as chiefs and assembly members. These stakeholders have encouraged residents to prioritize their safety and relocate to higher ground. As of the latest report, most of the affected farmers and residents have heeded the warnings and moved to safer locations.

The agency has prepared temporary shelters across vulnerable communities to accommodate those who may be displaced by the flooding. NADMO has also advised residents to move to higher ground and avoid waiting for the water to rise before seeking refuge, urging them to understand that one life is worth more than their farm products or livestock.

The organization remains vigilant, collaborating with other agencies for continuous monitoring and public education to mitigate the impact of the expected event.
