MoEHE interviews nominees for nuclear engineering scholarships

Yesterday, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) interviewed students nominated to participate in the National Scholarship Initiative aimed at obtaining a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering. This collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) reflects Qatar's commitment to fostering homegrown professional workforces that support scientific advancements and radiological security in alignment with Qatar National Vision 2030.

Acting Director of MoEHE's Scholarships Department, Noura al-Ansari, revealed that the nuclear engineering program, commenced as part of the government scholarship program for the 2026-27 academic year, boasts significant benefits and incentives to draw students. Recognizing the high demand for this program, al-Ansari noted that the interest in enrolling has far surpassed expectations.

Students pursuing this scholarship will have their years of study credited toward their government service period, with a salary of QR20,000 during the scholarship term at Grade 9 within MoECC, she disclosed to Qatar News Agency (QNA).

Al-Ansari emphasized that the program has garnered a record turnout, indicating a heightened societal awareness of labor market demands. The MoEHE has extended the nomination deadline for this program until August 15, 2026, ensuring alignment with MoECC's requirements. Eng. Hamad Salah Ibrahim, Assistant Director of MoECC's Radiation Protection Department, elucidated that the initiative aims to provide scholarships to Qatari students to bolster the development of a technical and human workforce in peaceful nuclear energy applications.

The program targets attracting students to this field and integrating them into the workforce at MoECC, particularly within the Radiation Protection Department, which focuses on radiation licensing, inspection, safety, and technical cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), alongside the country's central radiation laboratories.

This initiative underscores Qatar's dedication to enhancing radiation safety and security and fostering a culture of knowledge and competency-oriented institutions. It also highlights the urgent need to cultivate specialized national capabilities in regulatory oversight and supervision, reinforce prevention and sustainability principles, and offer students pathways to secure and distinguished careers, thereby supporting Qatar's preparedness to tackle specialized challenges in this critical field.
