Drought raising risk of more explosive Canada fires, officials say

Canadian officials warned on Tuesday that widespread drought in British Columbia has raised the risk of more fast-growing wildfires. The province currently has 102 active wildfires, including the Bald Range blaze that began Friday and rapidly spread, forcing thousands to evacuate. Provincial Forests Minister Ravi Parmar stated that officials expect a high potential for lightning-caused wildfire starts due to the hot and dry weather conditions.

BC Wildfire Service Operations Director Cliff Chapman reported that the Bald Range fire exhibits explosive behavior. Okanagan Lake, a 120 km-long lake in southern British Columbia, is experiencing historically low water levels due to multiple factors such as limited snowpack and reduced rainfall. BC Water Minister Randene Neill emphasized the critical need for water conservation to prevent an even worse situation next summer.

Nationally, Canada's vast boreal forest and rising temperatures, which are increasing twice as fast as the global average, make the country highly vulnerable to intense, fast-spreading wildfires. Human-induced climate change has doubled the likelihood of extreme fire conditions in Canada this year, according to researchers at the World Weather Attribution group.
