Mexican reinforcements arriving for wildfire fight in Summerland, B.C.

Reinforcements are coming in the fight against a devastating wildfire on the shores of Okanagan Lake in southern British Columbia, Canada. This inferno has forced the evacuation of 20,000 residents and has claimed at least one life. According to Hugh Murdoch, a representative from the BC Wildfire Service, 100 Mexican firefighters will join the battle today.

The wildfire has burned a vast area of 156 square kilometers and has already destroyed numerous homes, with most of the community of Faulder being razed. Despite the firefighters being adequately staffed, they are facing a "monumental task" given the steep, hot conditions and "spotting" that is triggering outbreaks beyond the fire perimeter.

This situation has led to the launch of a criminal investigation by the RCMP into the cause of the fire, which erupted on Friday and claimed the life of an 80-year-old woman in Meadow Valley. The wildfire has also destroyed the tiny community of Faulder, though official damage assessments are pending due to hazardous conditions.

Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes informed a briefing on Monday that the community's 12,000 residents will not be returning home anytime soon, but they should prepare for life in the evacuation zone. He warned that it will be a difficult time, as many people have lost their homes and those who have lost homes need support. The BC Wildfire Service is bracing for a high potential of lightning-caused wildfires in the central Interior and the Okanagan.

Currently, about 100 fires are burning across British Columbia, with approximately half of them uncontrolled.
