Man arrested after trying to open Batik Air emergency door at 9,144m on flight from Malaysia to India

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — The 36-year-old Jamsheer Athanikkal was apprehended after allegedly attempting to manipulate an emergency door while onboard a Batik Air flight traveling from Malaysia to India at an elevation of approximately 9,144 metres. As per People, the suspect exhibited erratic behaviour throughout the journey, which commenced from Malaysia and culminated in India.

An Indian Express report cited a police officer stating the incident transpired between 9.30pm and 11pm local time, with the 36-year-old occupying seat 12A on the aircraft. "Without any provocation, he endeavoured to open the emergency exit door, resulting in the damage of the window panel," the officer recounted. "Additionally, he threatened other passengers and crew members who endeavoured to dissuade him from his actions."

Video footage circulating on social media depicted several crew members subduing Jamsheer using zip ties. He was apprehended upon the aircraft's arrival at Kochi International Airport, suspected of criminal intimidation, refusal to obey safety instructions, and endangering public safety. When questioned about his motivation, Jamsheer reportedly admitted during his interrogation that he acted impulsively, citing an unspecified inspiration akin to a character from Batman. The crew of Batik Air lauded for their adept handling of the situation.
