Man arrested after trying to open Batik Air emergency door at 9,144m on flight from Malaysia to India

A man was apprehended on a Batik Air flight from Malaysia to India after attempting to open an emergency exit door at an altitude of approximately 9,144 meters. Identified as Jamsheer Athanikkal, the 36-year-old suspect exhibited erratic behavior during the flight, which departed from Malaysia for India recently, according to Indian Express.

A police officer reported that the incident took place between 9:30 pm and 11:00 pm local time, with Jamsheer seated in seat 12A. "Without any provocation, he tried to open the emergency exit door and damaged the window panel," the officer stated. "He also threatened other passengers and crew members who attempted to intervene."

Video footage circulating on social media depicted several crew members restraining Jamsheer using zip ties. He was subsequently arrested upon landing at Kochi International Airport on suspicion of criminal intimidation, refusal to follow safety instructions, and endangering public safety. When questioned about his motive, Jamsheer allegedly told the police that he acted impulsively, claiming he suddenly felt the urge to do so.

A social media post attributed to Zafran mentioned, "Nak bukak pintu kecemasan bila tengah dalam flight. Dia ingat ni citer Batman." The Batik Air cabin crew received commendations for their handling of the situation.
