Malala attends People Renaissance Movement launch after long absence from DCP events

The Deputy Leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party, Cleophas Malala, made a notable appearance at the national launch of the People’s Renaissance Movement (PM) on August 11, 2026, marking his return to key DCP events after a period of relative inactivity. Malala's presence at the event, held at the A.S.K Dome, Jamhuri Park, Nairobi, was significant as it came after his conspicuous absence from several high-profile DCP engagements, raising questions about his role within the party and his relationship with its leader, Rigathi Gachagua.

The PM Party launch was attended by a host of prominent political figures, including former Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju, former Chief Justice David Maraga, PLP leader Martha Karua, Ekuru Aukot, Willis Otieno, gospel musician Rufftone, activist Bob Njagi and musician Reuben Kigame. Speaking at the launch, Malala expressed his support for a multiparty system, stating it provides Kenyans with more opportunities to exercise their democratic rights through elections.

He also highlighted the challenges faced by families impacted by tragic events related to demonstrations, urging the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights to intervene and ensure human rights are upheld. This appearance by Malala is particularly noteworthy given the speculation surrounding his recent lack of visibility within DCP, which some had interpreted as a possible rift with Gachagua.

However, Malala has dismissed these rumors, asserting his continued unity with Gachagua and dismissing reports of a political fallout. In June, Malala had been absent from a DCP retreat in Mombasa, leading to questions about his whereabouts, which Gachagua attributed to his health, citing that he had sought sick leave. Malala has since returned to DCP activities, indicating a renewed commitment to the party.

Most recently, he has outlined plans to increase his political activities in Western Kenya, announcing a 45-day political retreat in Kakamega to strengthen DCP's presence in the region. This strategic move is expected to enhance his role in DCP's preparations for the 2027 General Election, particularly in Western Kenya, where he remains a key political figure.
