From 15 minutes to four: New Dubai roads making journeys dramatically faster

Dubai has been constructing roads year-round, and many of those projects are now open, saving commuters significant amounts of time. By comparing the times before and after these changes, a total of approximately 37 minutes have been shaved off five key journeys. Here's a breakdown of the five most impactful projects:

1. Hessa Street: The 4.5-kilometre stretch between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road saw a dramatic transformation. The roadway and bridges were widened to four lanes in each direction, doubling capacity from 8,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. Completed on April 19, 2026, this project reduced travel time by 15 minutes to just four minutes. Phase two, extending the improvement three kilometres further, is already underway.

2. Dubai Harbour Bridge: Opened in phases from June 2026 to July 2026, this 1,500-metre bridge with two lanes in each direction has cut travel time by 12 minutes, down to three minutes. Running from Interchange 5 on Sheikh Zayed Road, through Al Naseem Street and Al Falak Street, and connecting to Dubai Harbour Street, the bridge handles 6,000 vehicles per hour each way, with traffic flowing from both Deira and Jebel Ali directions.

3. Commercial Centre Roundabout: Completed on May 9, 2026, this 500-metre bridge improved access to Sheikh Zayed Road for traffic coming from Al Badaa toward 2nd of December Street. By creating direct links to Sheikh Rashid Street and Al Wasl Street, it reduced travel time by eight minutes to just two minutes.

4. Al Qudra Street and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street: Completed on August 9, 2026, this 700-metre four-lane bridge handled 6,000 vehicles per hour. By reducing waiting time to just one minute by the time the project is fully completed, it has already reduced travel time by 85% to just one minute on full completion. The project is part of a larger Al Qudra Road Development Project that aims to support continued residential and economic development in the surrounding areas.

5. World Trade Centre Roundabout, third bridge: Opened in June 2026, this one-kilometre, two-lane bridge reduced travel time by six minutes to just one minute. Situated at the intersection of five arterial roads, including Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, Sheikh Rashid Street, and 2nd December Street, this bridge eases access to Al Karama and Deira.
