Major earthquake claims 111 lives in Colombia

A catastrophic 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit western Colombia early Monday, claiming at least 111 lives and leaving 87 injured in the wake of widespread building damage. The quake struck the coastal Choco region at a depth of 100km, sparking frantic rescue efforts for survivors trapped in the debris. President Abelardo de la Espriella, a recent appointee, declared a state of emergency, vowing to deploy all resources to protect lives and provide aid to affected regions.

Pereira, the provincial capital, suffered the brunt of the devastation, with at least 40 deaths reported in the Risaralda region. The quake destroyed a significant portion of buildings in Manizales, including a beloved cathedral tower. Cali, Colombia's third-largest city, reported at least 20 buildings crumbling, trapping people beneath the rubble.

Authorities in Cali warned of serious damage in Quibdo, the provincial capital, where videos revealed more buildings reduced to rubble. The tremor also affected neighboring countries, with Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela feeling its impact. Washington, the EU, Israel, Mexico, Ecuador, and France all offered assistance, as Latin America grapples with the aftermath of this devastating earthquake.
