Madlanga tears into Fadiel Adams over delayed witness statement

Chair Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga harshly criticized Fadiel Adams for his failure to provide a timely witness statement, questioning his ability to serve as a parliamentary figure. The intense exchange occurred during the Madlanga Commission's pursuit of Adams' compliance, which had been repeatedly sought. Adams claimed his laptop had been dysfunctional for approximately 18 months, preventing him from responding to the commission's inquiries via email.

However, Madlanga found this explanation unconvincing, given Adams' ongoing role as a Member of Parliament. The evidence leader, Advocate Matthew Chaskalson, disclosed that Adams was given until October 25, 2025, to submit his sworn statement, yet it was only received late at night before his scheduled appearance. This delay compelled the commission to issue a subpoena, forcing Adams to testify.

Madlanga further pressed Adams regarding the lack of a statement, asking how he could effectively fulfill his parliamentary duties if he couldn't manage electronic communication. Despite Adams' response that "Parliament can confirm," the tension remained high. The chair cautioned Adams that the commission and its people deserved seriousness.

Madlanga expressed concern that Adams' conduct could undermine the legitimacy of the inquiry. Consequently, the commission adjourned Adams' testimony to August 19, giving legal teams more time to review the late-submitted statement.
