Fadiel Adams in the spotlight at the Madlanga Commission

Fadiel Adams, leader of the National Coloured Congress, is set to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry this week. The commission is investigating a campaign by senior officials at the IDAC to manipulate the law and fabricate criminal cases against top law enforcement figures. Adams, currently suspended from Parliament, will be questioned about his Section 27 whistleblower affidavit, which sparked the investigation into corruption, misuse of funds, and vetting manipulation within Crime Intelligence in November 2024.

Testimony over the past few days revealed that Adams' complaints were the starting point for a broad institutional clash. High-ranking political and judicial figures allegedly pushed unauthorized investigations, bypassed statutory regulations, and aimed to force top law enforcement leaders out of office. Former IDAC head Andrea Johnson and chief investigator Dylan Perumal are accused of scheming to fabricate cases, push unauthorized probes, and target top law enforcement officials like Fannie Masemola and Dumisani Khumalo.

Prosecutor Drushantha Ramsamy testified that Johnson instructed her team to keep a secret investigation from Masemola, allowing IDAC to later charge him with perjury. Johnson and Perumal allegedly pushed an aggressive agenda to arrest and remove Khumalo based on weak or inaccurate evidence. A secret meeting between Johnson and suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu was also revealed, with Johnson allegedly exerting control over the case behind the scenes.

While Johnson and Perumal deny any involvement in a plot, senior officials at IDAC have testified to unusual reporting lines and Johnson's handling of sensitive Crime Intelligence files. The Presidency announced that the commission's second interim report recommends further criminal investigations against Lt-Gen Shadrack Sibiya, Fannie Nkosi, Brown Mogotsi, and "Witness G".
