MACC, police probing TH after RCI findings as govt warns no one will be spared

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and police are currently investigating alleged misconduct related to Tabung Haji (TH), according to information provided by Dr Zulkifli Hasan, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs). The investigation stems from findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report, which was presented last month to the Cabinet.

Several individuals identified in the RCI findings have been detained as part of the ongoing investigations. Dr Zulkifli emphasized that the government has no intention of protecting anyone found responsible for abuse of power or breach of trust involving TH's funds and assets, which are held on behalf of Malaysian pilgrims. He reiterated that there would be no compromise against those involved in wrongdoing related to the people's money.

TH has already taken steps to address some of the RCI recommendations, completing more than 75% of them, but cautioned that those managing the institution at the time cannot claim ignorance of its financial problems. Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) had previously issued five warning letters to TH's chairman and the then minister responsible for religious affairs due to concerns about the imbalance between TH's assets and liabilities.

These warnings were issued to prevent TH from continuing to breach financial requirements and potentially risking the country's financial stability.
