At least 132 killed in Colombia’s largest earthquake in years

At least 132 people have died and a state of emergency has been declared after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia. The quake occurred at 07:34 local time, with a depth of 103km. The death toll is expected to rise, as more individuals may be trapped under collapsed buildings. The epicenter was near the village of San José del Palmar in Chocó province.

The city of Pereira, in Colombia's coffee-growing region, experienced the most significant damage, with at least 40 deaths and 65 collapsed buildings reported. Other cities like Cali, Manizales, Quibdó, Medellín, and Bogotá also felt the impact. President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared a national disaster situation, allowing for budget reallocation and special powers for emergency response.
