Spanish workers collectively accumulate a median of 6.43 million hours of overtime per week, according to calculations by the Comisiones Obreras (CC OO) economic cabinet based on Spanish Active Population Survey (EPA) data. Despite legislation mandating compensation, entrepreneurs fail to pay for 40% of these hours, amounting to 2.54 million hours.

The remaining 3.89 million hours are compensated. However, the extent of uncompensated overtime varies significantly depending on the workplace. A more detailed analysis of the data highlights six sectors, with education and telecommunications and computer services leading the pack, where unpaid overtime far exceeds paid overtime.

In geographic terms, this phenomenon is particularly pronounced in Madrid, the sole community where unpaid overtime surpasses paid overtime.
