‘Let’s work together’: Sabah Fire Dept urges public to avoid open burning amid transboundary haze

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 11 — In response to transboundary haze originating from Kalimantan, Indonesia, the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has called upon the public to cease open burning, as the smoke from forest fires in neighboring regions has begun to impact air quality in Sabah, particularly in areas such as Kota Kinabalu and Kimanis.

Director Mohd Pisar Aziz pointed out that winds from southern and central Borneo are carrying dense smoke towards northern Borneo, thereby reducing visibility and deteriorating air quality in the state. Aziz emphasized that the hot and dry weather conditions are exacerbating the risk of forest fires, urging the public to collaborate in preventing them and safeguarding lives, property, and the environment.

The open burning of rubbish, dry leaves, garden waste, construction waste, and other materials that might worsen the haze is prohibited, he stated. Despite the moderate air quality index (API) readings, high-risk groups, including asthma patients, children, and the elderly, should take additional precautions. Keningau and Pitas have also experienced a seven-day period without rain as of August 10, meeting the conditions for an open-burning ban.

The public is advised to limit outdoor activities between 11 am and 4 pm, maintain hydration, wear face masks in hazy areas, regularly inspect electrical wiring to prevent fires, and avoid carelessly discarding cigarette butts. Any suspicious activities or fires should be promptly reported to the JBPM through emergency services at 999.
