Leonhard emphasizes tackling in expecting Bills defensive starters to play in preseason opener

Jim Leonhard anticipates that his Buffalo Bills defensive starters will participate in their preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers on Saturday. The first-year coordinator expressed his focus on tackling, which he deemed a weakness last season. Leonhard believes that this preseason game against the Panthers, who are also expected to start their starters, will be an opportunity to address this issue.

He added that having players in pads for the first time will create excitement among the team. The game will provide the first competitive glimpse of the Bills team in transition since the firing of head coach Sean McDermott. Leonhard was hired to bring an attacking-style vision to the defense, which had struggled with allowing big plays in the past.

The Bills will be utilizing a new defensive scheme with three linemen and four linebackers, and at least five new starters. Leonhard emphasized the importance of physicality in the defense, stating that mistakes will be made but the team should be able to fly around and finish. Injuries could also be a factor, as the status of several projected starters is uncertain, including safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who appeared to aggravate an injury to his right calf during practice.
