President Donald Trump appears to have concluded that securing an opening of the Strait of Hormus is now complete, based on his recent statements. He announced at the White House that the waterway is now navigable for ships and will be "100 percent" controlled by the United States. Iran occasionally deploys mines, which are subsequently found and rendered harmless.

Trump also demanded compensation payments from Iran's leadership. Iran, which had threatened shipping with drones, initially did not respond to Trump's assertions. The Islamic Republic made the opening contingent on U.S. and allied concessions, including financial compensation for war damages. On Sunday, the UK maritime security authority reported the threat level in the strait remained heightened due to Iranian Revolutionary Guards' attacks on merchant vessels and other harassment.

The conflict over the Strait of Hormus, through which a major portion of Gulf oil exports pass, has been ongoing between the two parties. Iran's National Security Council demanded a complete financial compensation for war damages, along with an end to all U.S. threats, lifting of the maritime blockade on Iranian ports, and withdrawal of U.S. forces from the region.

The Strait, which transported nearly a fifth of global oil demand and is central to liquefied gas and fertilizer transport, saw a significant rise in oil and gas prices after the war began. The aim of the U.S. government, as per Vice President JD Vance, is to restore pre-war levels of oil and gas transport through the strait. Trump also made compensation payments a condition for further negotiations to resolve the conflict, blaming Iran for the deaths and injuries of protesters since 1979.

He also demanded Iran's accountability for killings and damage in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Gaza, vowing to include this point in all future negotiations. Republican Wadephul called on Iran to unconditionally open the strait to ensure free and secure shipping for all, writing on his platform X. Iranian Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul asked his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghtschi to engage constructively with neighbors and the U.S. in resolving the conflict.

The Strait of Hormus, which has been largely unimpeded since the U.S. and Israel launched their war against Iran in February, saw the onset of severe restrictions as Iran resorted to threats and attacks on ships, resulting in a sharp increase in global oil and gas prices.
