Korea, US, 39 other countries call for advance notice of ICBM, SLBM launches in joint statement

Washington - A coalition of nations, comprising South Korea, the United States, Japan, and 38 others, released a joint declaration on Tuesday advocating for countries to furnish ample warning prior to the deployment of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), and space launch vehicles (SLVs). This statement emerged in the wake of China's unexpected launch of an SLBM into the Pacific Ocean on July 6, which prompted disapproval from the U.S. and various other nations.

The participating countries refrained from explicitly naming China within the statement. However, they urged all nations, with a particular emphasis on nuclear-armed states, to provide notification of ICBM, SLBM, and SLV launches at least 24 hours in advance. The statement emphasized that missile tests conducted without sufficient advance warning pose a significant threat and undermine regional stability.

These notifications should encompass crucial details such as the ballistic missile's or SLV's generic category, the designated launch window, the launch site, and the intended trajectory, the statement said.

Furthermore, the coalition asserted that countries should ensure the prompt dissemination of these notifications to neighboring nations. By adhering to these guidelines, the statement aimed to mitigate the risks associated with unscheduled missile tests and foster a more secure international environment.
