Kelantan opens 63 investigation papers into illegal mining, encroachment

On August 11, 2025, Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan announced that 63 investigation papers have been opened in connection with encroachment and illegal mining activities in the state from 2025 to June of the same year. These papers resulted from 77 enforcement operations conducted in various hotspots involving the Gua Musang, Kuala Krai, Jeli, and Tanah Merah districts. The state government, along with enforcement agencies, has intensified its field action to curb these activities.

During a meeting with Datuk Shaari Mat Hussain (PAS-Paloh) at the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly, Fadzli revealed that the authorities have seized 65 excavators estimated to be worth RM15.8 million, thereby crippling the logistical capacity of illegal mining and encroachment activities. He also stated that investigations will be conducted to identify those involved in these activities, including middlemen, masterminds, organizers, protectors, or parties benefiting from them.

Once the illegal nature of the activity is established, a police report will be lodged, and an investigation paper will be opened.

Furthermore, Fadzli mentioned that the state government has discussed potential penalties, particularly for repeat offences, with relevant authorities and the Prosecution Unit of the Kelantan Land and Mines Office (PTG) to ensure stricter action is taken against those found guilty of illegal mining and encroachment.
