International Conference on Water Challenges underway in KwaZulu-Natal

The International Conference on Water Challenges and Solutions (ICWCS 2026) commenced in Richards Bay on August 12 and will conclude on August 13. The event, organized by the University of Zululand, Chang’an University, and the Research Centre for Water Science and Technology, seeks to address global water challenges and foster innovative solutions for a sustainable future.

Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister David Mahlobo is among prominent thought leaders expected to participate, with Mahlobo scheduled to deliver the keynote address on Wednesday. Mahlobo emphasized the global obligation to invest in science, improve governance, adopt innovation, and create resilient water systems to promote sustainable development.

Water supply issues continue to plague residents and businesses in Durban and Johannesburg. In Durban, parts of the city faced water shortages on Tuesday due to issues at Wiggins Water Treatment Works, including a temporary shutdown of Sherwood 3 reservoir and a pump failure. EThekwini Councillor Alicia Kissoon highlighted the ongoing stress on Sherwood 3 reservoirs and the planned water supply reduction in the southern aqueduct between August 12 and August 14.

The municipality will shut down a 1,200 mm concrete pipeline to facilitate sectional repair work for the new southern aqueduct pipeline upgrade project. Areas expected to be affected in Durban include Northdene, Queensmead Industrial, Queensburgh, Shallcross, Hillary, Malvern, Umbilo, Umhlathuzana, Umkhumbane, Chatsworth, Umlazi, Draaihoek, Ensimbini, Mahlabathini, Mangamazini, Mkhazini, Ntabankulu, Folweni, Klaarwater, St Wendolins, Savannah Park, Dambuza, Demat, and surrounding regions.

Similarly, parts of Johannesburg are also experiencing a three-day water supply disruption, affecting residents in Savoy, Waverley, Bramley, Kew, and Gresswold. Councillor Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku from Ward 74 reported the matter to Johannesburg Water, awaiting confirmation on the Corlett repairs and an estimated restoration time, as well as feedback on Club Street repair work.
