GPRTU orders drivers to reverse unauthorised fare increases

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has instructed drivers who have raised transport fares without authorization to immediately reverse the increases. Samuel Amoah, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, disclosed this directive following reports from commuters across the country about fare hikes despite a previously agreed suspension of a 30% increase.

Complaints began arriving on Monday, leading to a thorough investigation by the union. Amoah explained that after receiving specific information about affected routes, particularly around the Madina area, the GPRTU dispatched personnel to verify these complaints and engage with local transport leaders to ensure compliance with the agreed-upon suspension of fare hikes.

The union maintains a nationwide presence through various branches, each responsible for handling complaints within their jurisdiction. Amoah emphasized that if the union identifies drivers from their branch who are increasing fares unilaterally, they will take disciplinary action including sanctioning the drivers or mandating a return to the agreed fare levels.

While the GPRTU has seen success in enforcing this, challenges persist due to the presence of commercial drivers who are not affiliated with any recognized transport union. The GPRTU remains vigilant, continuing to monitor transport terminals and routes to detect and rectify any violations of the agreed fare suspension.
