GPRTU directs drivers to reverse fare increases without approval

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has instructed drivers who have raised transport fares without authorization to immediately lower their rates. Deputy Public Relations Officer Samuel Amoah disclosed that this directive came after complaints from commuters across the country about drivers charging higher fares despite an agreement to halt a planned 30% increase.

Amoah explained that the union initiated follow-up investigations upon receiving complaints, verifying the issues and convening meetings with local transport leaders to ensure compliance. The GPRTU is also imposing disciplinary actions against members who breach the agreement. With branches throughout Ghana, the union's branch executives handle complaints within their jurisdictions and can sanction drivers or order them to revert to the previously agreed-upon fares if they are found to have increased fares unilaterally.

While enforcement is challenging due to the presence of non-unionized drivers, the GPRTU remains committed to monitoring transport terminals and routes to identify and rectify any violations of the fare agreement.
