GPHA rolls out measures to address landside congestion at Tema Port

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has implemented new operational measures to tackle the severe landside congestion currently affecting the Port of Tema. The congestion results from a surge in import traffic, a rise in empty containers awaiting export, and traffic issues around the port area. In a Friday statement, the GPHA reported that similar congestion issues were seen at various ports in the West African region, causing delays in moving loaded and empty containers.

The Authority stated it had raised the operational alert level for all stakeholders and was collaborating with shipping lines and terminal operators to alleviate the situation and improve cargo movement. The measures include speeding up empty container evacuation through more vessel calls, increasing truck deployment and container transfer operations, and improving empty container management systems.

The GPHA also aims to optimize yard usage and traffic management processes to boost cargo flow and make the most of terminal capacity. The Authority urged importers, clearing agents, and cargo owners to speed up the clearance and evacuation of their shipments to lessen congestion. They explained that swiftly removing cargo would create more storage space, boost efficiency, and maintain smooth cargo flow.

GPHA management affirmed their commitment to a safe, efficient, and competitive port system to support Ghana's trade and economic growth, monitoring the situation closely and promising to implement further interventions to restore normal operations. The GPHA expressed gratitude to the trading community and the public for their patience, cooperation, and understanding during these challenging times.
