‘Govt Wants Teachers To Excel’

The government of Ghana has committed to supporting teachers by providing them with essential resources, professional development opportunities, and reforms to enable them to perform their duties effectively. Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, expressed this assurance during his address at the 18th Congregation and 4th Graduation ceremony of the Bachelor of Education Programme at Holy Child College of Education in Takoradi.

The event, themed "Women's Education: A Catalyst for Sustainable Development," saw 279 graduates, with the majority obtaining First Class Honours. The Minister highlighted the government's commitment to teacher education, mentioning plans to establish a University of Teacher Education to enhance teacher education in Ghana. However, Dr. Francis Hull Adams, the Principal of the College, pointed out several challenges facing the institution.

These include inadequate accommodation leading to overcrowding, insufficient washroom facilities, security concerns due to the lack of a completed perimeter wall, and inadequate sustainable internet connectivity. Dr. Adams appealed to the government, development partners, alumnae, corporate organizations, and friends of the College to support the institution further.

Dr. Phyllis Agyeman Nyarko, Principal of Abetifi Presbyterian College of Education and the Guest Speaker, emphasized that any country aspiring for sustainable development cannot overlook women's education. She underscored the vital roles women's education plays in economic growth, public health, poverty reduction, and environmental stewardship.
