UAE seizes 8.45m non-compliant tobacco and drink products in six-month tax drive

Dubai: In the first half of 2026, the United Arab Emirates' Federal Tax Authority seized over 8.45 million non-compliant excise products, including tobacco, energy drinks, and sweetened beverages, following more than 103,000 inspections across local markets. The seized goods resulted in tax liabilities and administrative penalties exceeding Dh174 million.

Inspections increased by 21% compared to the same period last year, with authorities focusing on tax compliance, consumer protection, and tax evasion. Tobacco products made up 6.58 million of the non-compliant packages seized, while 1.87 million packages of other excise goods, including carbonated and energy drinks, were also confiscated.

This represents a decrease in total seizures compared to the same period in 2025, despite the higher number of inspections. The FTA issued 3,343 registration notices to businesses not registered for Value Added Tax, up from 2,845 notices last year. Inspectors check businesses for tax invoices, correct pricing, and proper tax payment.

The Authority aims to maintain high levels of compliance, protect consumers, and combat tax evasion through ongoing enforcement efforts.
