Google’s Gemini AI app passes 1 billion monthly active users

Google's Gemini AI app has reached a significant milestone, surpassing 1 billion monthly active users, making it the 14th product from the company to achieve this feat. The achievement was announced by Google in a blog post by Josh Woodward, the vice president of Google Labs, Gemini and AI Studio. CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted Gemini as their "fastest growing product ever" in a post on X.

Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company, initially reported the app had 650 million monthly users in October of the previous year, increasing to 750 million by February. Pichai presented an even higher figure of 900 million at Google I/O in June, with the July quarterly report showing over 950 million users.

The company emphasized usage data rather than revenue figures for the announcement. Notably, 63% of Gemini users engage through voice, with a growing segment relying solely on voice commands. Parents are 43% more likely to use voice for daily tasks. One in five interactions with Gemini Live includes a live camera feed or screen sharing, while 38% of school-related requests involve an attachment.

Google reports more than 150 million images generated daily by the app. Over 100 million users access Gemini on iOS devices, and macOS users are found to engage twice as frequently. Gemini can trigger actions in over 40 apps.

Updates are on the horizon, with support for more than 60 additional regional dialects, expanded app automations, and new study tools expected in the coming weeks. The user base does not include figures for paid subscribers, which start at $7.99 a month for Google AI Plus and go up to $100 a month for Google AI Ultra. This omission is significant as Alphabet has increased its 2026 capital spending forecast to between $195 billion and $205 billion, much of it allocated to the infrastructure supporting models like Gemini.

The rapid growth of Gemini is attributed to its integration into Android, Chrome, Search, and Workspace, as well as its steady displacement of Google Assistant, which will cease operation on Android and Wear OS in September. Consequently, a large portion of monthly active users arrived through default installation rather than deliberate downloads.

Google has not disclosed the criteria for defining a monthly active user, nor does it claim to be the first product to reach a billion users monthly. According to Sensor Tower, OpenAI's ChatGPT app achieved this milestone in May, three months prior to Gemini. OpenAI further reported surpassing 1 billion weekly users on August 6.
