GAUA strike: KNUST administration offices opened but essential IT services hampered

Administrative offices at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) stayed open on the second day of a nationwide strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA). However, IT services were severely impacted as the strike entered its second day. The GAUA is protesting against what they see as unfair premium and allowance disparities.

Despite administrators walking out, JoyNews reports that administrative offices functioned as students and non-striking staff accessed their services. Contract staff and non-union administrators were present to assist those in need. Still, IT infrastructure needed for specific requests was unavailable, as key personnel responsible for it were absent.

Normally, the university's parking lot would be bustling, but on this day, several parking spots remained empty, suggesting union members were absent. The IT office at KNUST had students waiting in line for their assistance, but the office occupied by a GAUA member was closed. Sources indicate that GAUA may have not notified the National Labour Commission before initiating the strike, potentially breaching labor regulations.
