Europe is running short of Patriot missiles for Ukraine as allies reach their limits

European countries are facing a shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles to support Ukraine, with allies warning they have reached their operational limits, according to Politico. Germany has previously supplied Ukraine with Patriot air defense systems and missiles, but German officials must now consider both their own defense requirements and NATO obligations.

Other European nations must weigh the trade-off between supplying Ukraine and protecting their own borders. Brig. Gen. Jürgen Schrödl, a senior German Defense Ministry official, noted during a Berlin panel following the NATO summit in Ankara that they are reaching the limits of their capabilities and must also ensure their own defense.

The demand is putting additional pressure on Poland, Spain, and Greece, which possess stocks of Patriot missiles. PAC-3 and PAC-2 interceptors are particularly scarce. Ukraine's dependence on the United States is critical, as most PAC-3 interceptors are manufactured there. A senior U.S. official stated that Ukraine could potentially produce U.S.-designed Patriot interceptors under license, but later expressed concerns about the danger of providing such technology to Kyiv.

Concerns have arisen about depleted U.S. missile stocks following the Iran war, prompting Trump to stress that the United States must replenish its own stockpiles first. Ukraine has agreed to receive PAC-2 interceptors produced in Germany, but these deliveries are not anticipated until the following year. Some European countries near Russia are hesitant to transfer their existing Patriot systems to Ukraine, given their own air defense capabilities are viewed as insufficient.

Southern European countries, which have provided less assistance than Germany and many northern European states, are now attracting attention. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized that it is becoming increasingly difficult for Ukraine to obtain available missiles, describing the situation as a fierce competition for every single one.
