Emirati teen recovers from serious cycling accident to get back in saddle

Abdullah Al Shamsi, a 18-year-old Emirati with Down syndrome, has made an inspiring recovery after a severe cycling accident. Known as "The Don" in the UAE cycling community, Abdullah suffered a fractured pelvis and right hip in the accident and underwent surgery in January. Now back on his bicycle and competing again, Abdullah's father Hilal hopes to see him excel in triathlons and international competitions.

Hilal recalls the moment he realized the severity of the injury, as Abdullah slipped into a black-out state. His father admits that he feared Abdullah's future might be over, as cycling had become such an integral part of his son's life and social circle. However, months later Abdullah is not only back in the saddle but also setting his sights on higher goals.

Abdullah is the eldest of Mr Al Shamsi's four children, and his family discovered he had Down syndrome shortly after his birth. Despite initial concerns about potential health complications, Abdullah has not experienced many of the issues associated with the condition. The family actively sought support from organizations like Zayed Higher Organisation and advocated for inclusion in mainstream nurseries and schools.

Throughout Abdullah's journey, he found his calling in cycling, starting with the Al Wathba community cycling team and later joining the Abu Dhabi Cycling Club. His progress has been supported by sponsors, including property firm Modon. Abdullah has competed alongside non-disabled cyclists and even reached the podium in local races.

A turning point in Abdullah's career occurred after a high-speed crash left him with a serious pelvic injury. Doctors at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City confirmed the extent of the fracture, which extended into his hip joint and caused significant pain. The psychological impact of the accident was also profound, as Abdullah struggled to communicate his pain and withdrew from social interactions.

Dr Joseph Alsousou, a leading trauma surgeon, emphasized the importance of proper medical intervention and rehabilitation for Abdullah to regain his confidence in cycling.

Today, Abdullah continues to inspire his community with his determination and resilience. His nickname, "The Don," reflects the deep respect he commands in the cycling world. His story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the transformative impact of sports on individuals with disabilities.
